Investing in Community Through the Y - Myrna Gordon Skurnick
You’re a long-time resident of South Palm Beach County. How have you seen its civic needs change?
Over the years, I’ve watched our community grow, and with that growth has come a greater need for connection, inclusion, and support for families of all backgrounds. The Y continues to be a vital place where those needs are met with compassion and purpose.
Strong communities support the less fortunate. What causes do you personally find most compelling and why?
My lifelong love of the Arts began as a young girl in London, when my parents took me to the pictures (movies) and theatre. Later, my best friend and I would spend our Saturdays in the “gods” watching new shows from high above the stage. That joy stayed with me, inspiring my support of The Wick Theatre, FAU’s Arts programs, and most proudly, the Myrna Gordon Skurnick Creative Arts Initiative at The LAB at the YMCA, which helps young people discover that same spark of creativity
and confidence.
You’ve donated to the YMCA. What was the focus of your investment and why did you pick the Y as a vehicle for that gift?
I first discovered the Y’s sense of belonging through childhood gymnastics. Now, I support the Y to ensure future generations experience that same joy and opportunity.
How would you describe the YMCA’s community role to someone who’s just moved into the area?
The Y truly brings people together – a place that uplifts, connects, and inspires hope that endures
across generations.
