Ensuring Water Safety in Palm Beach County!
DID YOU KNOW...
- Drowning is the 2nd leading cause of death for children ages 5–14 years.
- If an adult doesn't learn to swim, there is only a 13% chance a child in the household will learn to swim.
That's why the Y has been committed to making aquatics programs accessible to all ages and income levels for over 100 years. By providing kids and adults with the tools they need to be confident in and around water, we can help save lives.
PHONES DOWN, EYES UP!
Checking your phone may seem like a quick task, but it can quickly become a distraction — and distractions around the water can have major consequences. That is why it is super important for families to always designate a Water Watcher — an adult who maintains visual contact with all children playing in or near the water.
According to the National Drowning Prevention Alliance, 88% of child drownings occur with at least one adult present, and 50% of children drown within 25 yards of a parent or other adult.
SAFETY AROUND THE WATER PROGRAM
The Y’s Safety Around the Water Program is offered year-round at our Ys or at pre-approved sites throughout Palm Beach County and offered to qualified groups at no cost. This program is evidence-based and developed on a foundation of “Safety First, Swim Second,” and is geared for ages 3–17.
Our YMCA also offers "Safety Around the Water Week" throughout the year to our community, which includes FREE swim lessons for youth. Continue to check back with us to see when our next SAW week is being planned.
